Meditating has become so popular in the past few years. That may be in part due to the fact that life on our planet has become more stressful. All of humanity seems to be dealing with deadly viruses, economic failures and civil unrest. Those are just a few of the issues that cause people to stress out. Often, we each have our own personal dilemmas including financial and family problems. There are lots of things to worry about these days.
Meditation and ancient times
Meditation is an age-old practice that first began in 5,000-3,000 BCE in the Indus Valley in India. Archaeologists have uncovered wall art that depicts people sitting in a common position with legs crossed and hands resting on their knees. This very clearly shows that humans had stress in their lives long before the 21st century ever rolled around. And they didn’t have drugs to help them deal with it. So they developed a simple way to get rid of the stress.
In order to get the most out of meditating, it’s important to follow a few guidelines. Try these tips:
- Find a quiet place where you can be alone.
- Set the mood. Put on some soft music. Light a candle. Use essential oils.
- Close your eyes. Take a deep breath in, then slowly release it. Do this several times until you can feel the stress leaving.
- Focus your mind on pleasant thoughts. You could try picturing a peaceful valley with a calming waterfall. Or focus on a blue sky or a beautiful garden. Try to imagine how it smells.
If you need more help, there are lots of great websites and apps today that teach you all about meditating.
